This page provides instructions on how to upload photographs or videos to the LRCLV FTP
server. Hereafter, we refer only to photos but the instructions are identical
for video files.
Before you can upload photograps to the club FTP server, you must first
obtain an FTP account from the LRCLV webmaster. The webmaster will provide
you with three pieces of information that you will need as you follow these
instructions. They are:
1) The Internet address of the club FTP server (called the IP address
below).
2) Your User ID.
3) Your Password.
To request the above information from the LRCLV webmaster, click here.
Make sure that you provide your full name and e-mail address in your request.
FTP account information will not be provided to non-club members.
These instructions assume that you don't already have a FTP client
installed on your computer and that you do have Internet access (the
faster the better). What is a FTP client?
It is a program that is designed to transfers files from your computer to
another computer across the Internet using the FTP or File Transfer Protocol.
It usually looks like your file explorer except that it will have a few extra
panels and options that are related to transferring files. Of course,
don't worry about that now. We'll explain those extra items below.
Follow these instructions to get an FTP client installed and set up on your
machine and to begin uploading photographs to the LRCLV club FTP server
Step 1 - Installing a FTP Client Application
It is recommended that you download and install the free FileZilla Client
software from www.filezilla-project.org by clicking
on the link above. You will see the following page in your web browser:
Click
on the "Download FileZilla Client" and download it to your computer's desktop.
When the download is complete, double click the file on your desktop named "FileZilla_x.x.x.x_win32-setup.exe"
where x.x.x.x is the version number of the software. Follow the
installation instructions that appear on your screen. Eventually, you will
see a screen listing installation options:
Select all of the check boxes and continue with the installation by clicking on
the "Next" button. Complete the installation by following the remaining
instructions that appear on your screen. Your FileZilla FTP client
software should now be installed. Please take the time to read the
help files provided with your FileZilla FTP client software. It will help
make the following instructions more clear.
Step 2 - Configuring the FileZilla FTP Client Application
Now that you have the FileZilla FTP client installed on your computer, you will
notice a new icon on your desktop that looks like:
Double click on the icon and open up the FileZilla application. From the main menu, click "File" then "Site Manager..."
The following site configuration dialog box will be displayed:
Now, create a FTP site by:
1.) Click on the "New Site" button
2.) Enter the site name. We recommend entering "LRCLV Photo Uploads"
3.) In the "Host" field, enter the IP address of the LRCLV FTP server (provided
to you by the LRCLV webmaster).
4.) Change the Login Type to "Normal".
5.) Enter your User ID (provided to you by the LRCLV webmaster).
6.) Enter your password (provided to you by the LRCLV webmaster). The password
is case sensitive so be certain to enter it exactly as it appears in the e-mail
that was sent to you by the webmaster.
Click on the "Transfer Settings" tab near the top of the dialog box and make the
following changes to the configuration:
1.) Change the transfer mode to "Active" then
2.) Click the "OK" button. The site configuration dialog box will close.
That's it. You're finished configuring your FileZilla FTP client to upload
photographs to the LRCLV FTP server.
Step 3 - Connecting to
the LRCLV FTP Server with
FileZilla FTP Client
Before you can upload your photographs to the LRCLV FTP Server, you must first
copy the photo files from your camera to a folder in your computer. Follow
the instructions provided by your camera photo management software to do this.
Once the photos have been transferred from your camera to your computer, you're
now ready to upload them to the LRCLV FTP server by following these
instructions.
First, open up your FileZilla FTP client by double clicking on the icon on your
desktop. Notice that near the top left corner of the screen is a site
manager icon as shown below:
Click on the down arrow. The "LRCLV Photo Uploads" site selection will
appear below. Click on it. FileZilla will now automatically connect
to the LRCLV FTP server and log in. This should take only a moment.
Your screen should now appear similar to this:
Your screen is organized into five important panels that we'll give a brief
description on:
1.) This is the communications panel. Here you will see all of the FTP
commands being exchanged between your FIleZilla client application and the LRCLV
FTP server.
2.) This is your computer's folder view panel. Click on folders in this
panel to navigate around your computer's hard drives, CD and DVD drives and
other storage devices. If your camera is connected to your computer via a
USB cable and it is capable of acting like a hard drive, you will also see your
camera's DCIM folders here.
3.) This is your computer's file view panel. It displays the files and
folders contained in the current folder selected in the above panel #2.
4.) This is the LRCLV FTP server's folder view panel. It displays all of
the folders that you have previously created inside your FTP account.
5.) This is the LRCLV FTP server's file view. It displays the files and
folders contained in the current folder in the above panel #4.
Now that you have a feel for the layout of the FileZilla FTP client, lets learn
two important tasks. They are:
1.) Create a new folder for your photographs.
2.) Transfer your photographs to the folder you created.
Step 4 - Creating A Folder For Your Photographs
To keep your photographs organized in your FTP account, you should create a new
folder for each photograph set. You can create a new folder by:
1.) Right click on the folder in panel #3 (to the right side of your window).
A drop down menu will appear.
2.) Click on the "Create directory" selection.
The following dialog box will appear:
Enter a descriptive name for the new folder. Make sure that you include
the location and date as part of the name. This way the LRCLV webmaster
will know where and when the photographs were taken (photographs that are
uploaded to the LRCLV FTP server without this information cannot be used on the
club web site).
Now click the "OK" button. The new folder should now be created.
Step 5 - Uploading Your Photographs
Now that you've got a folder created to place your photographs in, you can now
upload your photographs to that folder. Using the two left panels in
FileZilla, navigate to the folder in your computer (or your camera if it is
attached via a USB cable) where the photographs are located.
In the lower panel to the left, highlight all of the photographs that you
want to upload to the new folder you just created in your LRCLV FTP account.
Now, using your mouse, place your pointer over the highlighted photograph files
and press and hold down your left mouse button. While holding down the
left button of your mouse, drag your mouse pointer over to the right panel and
let go of the button. This is called "drag and drop". Depending on
how fast your Internet connection is and how large the photograph files are, the
transfer can take one or two minutes to as much as an hour. Be patient and
don't close the window while the photos are transferring.
When FileZilla is finished transferring your photographs, you can then close the
window. Your files are now transferred to the club FTP site.
Step 6 - Getting Your Photos Onto The Web Site
If you browsed to the LRCLV club web site's photo section you will probably
notice that your photos aren't there yet. That's because the webmaster
needs to review them to make sure that they meet club standards and will likely
need to resize them and organize them for the web site. The LRCLV web
master won't automatically know that you uploaded your photos to the club FTP
server. Let him or her know by sending an e-mail by clicking here.
Let the webmaster know your name and the name of the folder that you placed your
photos in.
Allow several days for the webmaster to review and prepare your photos for the
web site. Please understand that LRCLV adheres to strict standards as to
the content and quality of photographs that are placed on the web site.
Some or possibly all of your photographs may be rejected if they don't meet club
standards. If you have any questions about those standards, please feel
free to ask. You may also e-mail your questions by clicking the above
link.
Thank you for your photo submissions and being an "active" member of the Land
Rover Club of Las Vegas.
